On The Dry Dock, Plein air sketch of a Scallop Boat in Virginia

This piece was painted several days ago in Newport News, Virginia. The boat was quite a distance from me and behind a gated boat yard. I loved the scene, so I parked across the street and decided to give it a go.

I added a few elements here and there to give it some interest, but all in all, it's a nice sketch that I will use later for a canvas painting.

Hope you like it. Have a great Sunday.

This piece was painted yesterday in downtown Newport News, Virginia. I found a new vantage point and was fortunate to have a sunny day to paint these scallop boats. As soon as I saw them it was like they were calling me to break out my easel. I couldn't resist, so I did.

It's a different technique than I have used before. I'm tyring to refine my style a bit so that my work has a cohesive look to it. This is more of an impressionistic style and quite frankly, I really enjoyed doing it. I'll try this piece soon on a larger canvas in the studio.

Hope you find it interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

Portland Lobster Boats, Original acrylic landscape painting

This is a scene from Portland, Maine. I took a few pics while on vacation this summer so I could do a few reference paintings later on. I must admit that I do enjoy working en plein air much better than doing studio pieces. There's nothing like having the subject right in front of you. Having said that, the big advantage for me is that when I'm in the studio I can make better decisions about what to include and omit from the painting. I tend to get overwhelmed when I'm on site not really knowing what to include in the painting. I guess you could say there's an art to that.

With practice I think I'll become more aware of this when I'm outdoors thus creating more simplistic and better studies for future works.

That's all for now. A special thanks to all of the followers and collectors who are supporting my art career. Have a great day.

So this is a study painting for a larger acrylic painting that I'm going to start this weekend. It's a scene I came up with using some reference photos and a bit of imagination.

I used some watercolor washes to start the painting letting the colors drift across the page without any concern for where that ended up. The idea was to come back later with some gouache to help contain the loose colors. I really enjoyed the freedom of this technique and have decided to make my mixed media paintings more of a study process for larger works which is something that I'm very interested in doing. I often paint on a smaller scale and have the desire to bump it up some in the future. Perhaps even moving into some oils.

That's all for now. Thanks for stopping by and have a great Tuesday.

Rustic Harbor, Original Acrylic Landscape Painting

16" x 20"
Acrylic on Canvas
Sold

My goal was to loosen up a bit on this one. My biggest challenge with acrylic on canvas is that I paint too wet and I'm not patient enough to allow layers to dry before I add the next one. I tend to treat them like my watercolors, but I have to step back and remember to wait, wait, wait. I'm just so energized when I'm working that I let the passion come before the techniques. I'll get it in the long run. Becoming a better artist is always a full time job. I must admit though that I don't mind clocking in for this one.

Hope you like it. I have a few more similar to this one that I'll post over the next few days.

Trottor II...24 x 30 Original Acrylic Abstract Horse Painting on Canvas

24" x 30"
Acrylic on Canvas

This is another salvaged painting from the recycle bin. It was originally a landscape that I lost interest in and decided to paint over. I used a similar palette and technique as yesterday's post.

Hope you like it and Happy Halloween to all. ( If you celebrate that sort of thing )

Wild Stallion...Original Abstract Horse Painting on Canvas

This piece was originally a seascape gone bad. Since I've been in horse mode for week, or so, I decided to convert this painting by leaving some of the original color and adding some intense yellows and oranges. Once that dried, I added some darks to the body of the horse being sure to go over the edges. Once that dried, I added the lighter tones which really brought the painting together. Until the last stage was complete, it looked like a mess of random strokes that made up nothing more than an abstract painting. I used a palette knife to scratch back some lines that really give this animal some energy and movement.

Hope you like it and thanks for stopping by.
