This is the second painting I did in plein air of this subject. You can see the first one in the previous post. I changed the layout to feature the boats and reflections. Not sure which one I like the best.

Hope you like it. Thanks for stopping by.

I painted this one en plein air yesterday in downtown Newport News, Virginia. For the past week it's been pretty gray and wet and Sunday we finally had great weather to get outdoors.

The harbor was jammed with boats that were avoiding the storm at sea, so I had many to choose from. I was really captured by the reflections and I decided to give it a go.

That's all for now. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

I took a few pictures about a month ago while I was walking around in Downtown Hampton, Virginia. I discovered this dock that was tucked away behind some taller hotels and shops. I'll try to get out there soon to do some plein air work. The image has stayed with me and I couldn't resist giving it a go from my photo.

Thanks for stopping by.

It's fall across our country and most of the trees are naked. I painted these tree a few days ago using a photo reference from my weekend getaway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The few days we spent there were pretty foggy and wet, so many of photos are gray. Here, the sun was trying to peek through the trees and clouds so, I decided to use it and try to create a memory of that moment.

Hope you like it. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

This is an expressive painting of a picture I took while on vacation in Maine this summer. I'm continuing to work with smaller scale paintings and tonal values for larger studio works. This piece and a few others will remain as part of my studies for some larger canvas paintings.

That's all for now. Have a great weekend.

I've been working on my technique quite a bit lately. I've tried to refine my work and technique so that I can have more control of the outcome. It's frustrating when I spend hours in the studio only to have a pile of rejects and tubes of wasted paint. My goal is to have more control and to work methodically, but yet with a sense of knowing where I'm going with the painting. I know that probably sounds like a standard for an artist, but for me it's a challenge.

I think with my latest works, I learned a lot about tonal values and hard and soft edges. I will start to loosen up and get back to my slinging ways, but with absolute control of my paint and method.

Hope you find it interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

Commission Painting for Local Ship Designer

This picture was taken this morning and it shows the latest progress on this painting. It's a huge piece measuring 6' x 4', so it takes some time to add layers. I love painting on this scale which historically intimidated me. I'll let this dry and start to define the ground level, foreground and workers. The workers are my main focus, so that's really where I want the viewer to end up.

Once I had the drawing roughed in, I added some color to the background and a few of the elements within the composition.

After adding a few layers of gesso to the canvas, I put in the initial drawing.
